Don't get excited, it's not Halloween yet. I've noticed when working with certain publications, there are some unwritten rules that an illustrator may not know about. I recently was commissioned by Nicholas Blechman to illustrate various "Horror Fiction" reviews for The New York Times Book Review. The only direction I had was to use black and red. I dig horror so I was totally into the assignment.
My sketches had "books" as the subject matter. Nicholas informed me about the Book Review's unwritten rule of not showing "books" within the art. Who knew? Fortunately, the decapitation rule, overruled the book rule. Thanks Nicholas, I love working with you. Maybe if we share some more unwritten rules, we can write the unauthorized rule book?
