This painting is part of the series of posters I've been commissioned to create this year for Soulpepper Theatre in Toronto. The play runs until April 19th.
"An evil duke. A motley Fool. A gaggle of country bumpkins. A melancholy philosopher. A girl, pretending to be a boy, pretending to be a girl in order to woo a boy. All the world is a stage, and in this play the stage is crowded with love and laughter and a delicious cast of players."

This image was made several years ago for Men's Health Magazine. The content of the story dealt with dating rituals.

For a story about a guy who can't stand idling cars in his community/ski resort town. He helps control the problem by switching the cars off himself.
The goal with the final was was something that looked militant and a little angry.
My 1950's J.C. Whitney auto parts catalogue came in handy. |

Did this poster image in one of my drawing classes at Art Center. The image is drawn from a costume model, and then the rest of the image is a kind of "stream of consciousness" process. The words might be based on something the model said, and the background figures are invented figures or whatever else jumps into my head as I'm drawing the piece. There are no pencil lines, and no attempt to map out or lay-in the image. It's what my old friend James McMullan calls "flying by the seat of your pants."
I try to encourage my students to save a place in their lives for a kind of "playful" exploration of image and ideas. These pieces take 2 to 3 hours.
