Week in Review
by Christian Northeast
Friday, 20 June 2008

This was for the front page of the Week in Review section of the New York Times. The story was about the Tony award nominees. The writer liked the plays, but felt that they all shared a similar quality of taking on tough subjects in a manner that wasn't very challenging, a little like TV on the stage.  I really wanted to avoid all the tired Broadway references of stages, curtains, lights...etc. I decided to pull words from the story to create a soothing tube of Broadway ointment. The editors changed a bit of the text, but left most of it intact.

This is the poster I created for ICON5, The Illustration Conference, which takes place in New York City from July 2-6.  The image is being used on street banners in the city, on the program cover, posters, and a variety of other collateral material.  I had a lot of fun working on this one, hope to see you at the conference.

MORIBITO is a Good Book!
by Yuko Shimizu

New book I did the cover and interior illustrations for is just hitting bookstores near you. Moribito – Guardian of the Spirit – by Nahoko Uehashi (Scholastic, AD: Phil Falco) is the first of a best-selling young adult fantasy series from Japan. I read it before I started illustrating, and I have to say I really enjoyed it. It is not just gripping and exciting, but has undertone of philosophy, ethics and teachings about life that you want the young readers to learn. I highly recommend it. moribito_photo.jpg
