Holiday Greetings 2010
(Friday, 31 December 2010) by Michael Bartalos

bartalos_2010_holiday_card_600x425.jpg

Season's greetings from snowy New York where I'm in the process of mailing out my annual holiday card. This one is issued in a limited edition of 475 numbered copies with the theme of air balloons, inspired by Antarctica's super-pressure research balloons and by the birth of ballooning as described in Richard Holmes' intriguing book The Age of Wonder.

As always, the card's year of issue (2010) is encoded in the graphics. It's abstractly represented and designed to be a challenge to find. Good luck, happy rest of the year, and an uplifting 2011 to all!

"Electric Eel" 2010 | Monotype | EARTH:Fragile Planet exhibit at The Society of Illustrators
June 4 - July 31, 2010

I was selected to create an original piece for the Energy theme of the EARTH: Fragile Planet exhibit. Energy is and will become one of the biggest challenges of sustainability this planet will face. I have always been fascinated with our ecosystem and the biodiversity of the plants and animals that live around us. I decided to approach this piece not as a statement but as a celebration of one of our most unique creatures, the Electric Eel. The Electric Eel possesses the ability to create energy and he also lives in a fragile and impacted world.

Edition of 60   unframed

I created the original MAX monotype soon after MAX came to Nevada City on tour and I was fascinated by its history. Legend tells us that there are 13 ancient crystal skulls in the world. Estimated to be thousands of years old, MAX was found in Guatemala between 1924 and 1926. It is considered that MAX was used by Mayan priests for healing and prayer. Many who have touched MAX have had instantaneous healings, received information about the origins of civilization, seen visions of other worlds, heard unusual sounds and have experienced expanded psychic abilities. My original MAX monotype was accepted into the ILLUSTRATORS 52 book and exhibit for 2010. I printed the entire edition by hand in my Nevada City studio. This Limited Edition Print will bring good luck. :)

Someone Is Doing Well at Tough Times

for today's New York Times Business Day section. Article about tech mogul Michael Dell of DELL doing really well with his landscaping business (along with all the different business he owns) during this tough times.

Also, on the side note, art director on this job was Minh Uong, who was the very first person to give me work when I was still in graduate school and when he was at Village Voice in 2002. My first job was a portrait as well, but I was really bad at it back then, and spent 3 days and nights making Tom Cruise looking like Tom Cruise. I still thank Minh till this day for trying a brand new student illustrator out, and for not giving up on me for three days on that one portrait. We ended up working together on a weekly column for a year or so for Voice. Now, at NYT, he doesn't have a lot of chances to hire illustrators, but it is always a pleasure to work with him. Thank you Minh.

I just did this painting for Roy Comisky at Security Management magazine.  The story was about a recent rise in crime in Mexico. Haemisphaerium Australe
(Sunday, 04 January 2009) by Michael Bartalos

2008.12.22 haemisphaerium australe500x643.jpg

Happy 2009! My New Year's card illustrates some constellations unique to the southern hemisphere: Centaurus, Cetus, Hydra, Scorpio, and Piscis Austrinus. The concept was inspired by Uranometria, a beautifully engraved star atlas of 1603 (the first to cover the entire celestial sphere), and by my recent travels south of the equator.

I'm currently at McMurdo Station in Antarctica for my project called The Art of Recycling in Antarctica : The Long View. I'll be here for most of January and you're invited to follow along on my dedicated project blog hosted by the California Academy of Sciences.

Incidentally, I won't see any constellations during my time here. At this deep southern latitude, the sun won't set till autumn.

Calligraphy in Print
(Monday, 17 November 2008) by Ward Schumaker

schucalligone.jpg

Print’s current Design Annual includes three of my calligraphic covers: a catalog for Hermès (Paris) that shows off my interest in livres d'artiste of the 1920s; a book with Stir (Shanghai) reflecting my love of work done in the 1950s by word painters associated with the New York School of Poetry (John O'Hara in particular); and a cover of 3x3 magazine (New York) which is my pastiche of various hand-drawn letter forms.

Other clients I’ve worked with include: United Airlines, Neiman Marcus, and Brown University; New York Times, Los Angeles Times, San Francisco Chronicle, and Le Figaro; St. Martin’s Press, Harcourt Brace, Sterling, and Payot-Rivages; Little House on the Prairie, Man de La Mancha, The Guthrie Theater and Spotco.

Nobody Move, Part 2.
(Wednesday, 13 August 2008) by Jeffrey Smith
I did these illustrations for a four part fiction series for Playboy magazine.  The title of the story is, "Nobody Move," by Denis Johnson, and the art director is Rob Wilson.  It a snazzy little noir story with plenty of guns, gangsters and gams.  That's Jimmy Luntz in the white tuxedo with old Ernest Gambol behind the wheel of his copper colored Cadillac Brougham.  And then there's that hot little dream boat, Anita Desilvera, with her eye on Jimmy and her back to dangerous Sally Fucks. Week in Review
(Friday, 20 June 2008) by Christian Northeast

This was for the front page of the Week in Review section of the New York Times. The story was about the Tony award nominees. The writer liked the plays, but felt that they all shared a similar quality of taking on tough subjects in a manner that wasn't very challenging, a little like TV on the stage.  I really wanted to avoid all the tired Broadway references of stages, curtains, lights...etc. I decided to pull words from the story to create a soothing tube of Broadway ointment. The editors changed a bit of the text, but left most of it intact.

MORIBITO is a Good Book!
(Friday, 23 May 2008) by Yuko Shimizu
New book I did the cover and interior illustrations for is just hitting bookstores near you. Moribito – Guardian of the Spirit – by Nahoko Uehashi (Scholastic, AD: Phil Falco) is the first of a best-selling young adult fantasy series from Japan. I read it before I started illustrating, and I have to say I really enjoyed it. It is not just gripping and exciting, but has undertone of philosophy, ethics and teachings about life that you want the young readers to learn. I highly recommend it. moribito_photo.jpg

No Geisha
(Tuesday, 20 May 2008) by Yuko Shimizu
I got this new book in the mail today, and I am loving what they did with the front and back cover design. It was a reuse of an illustration I did for a CD cover, and when the publisher asked for the image to be a book cover, I had no idea what they would do with a square image. I am happy with the designer's terrific job.

NY Times Book Review China Special
(Sunday, 04 May 2008) by Yuko Shimizu

Nicholas Blechman, art director of NYT Book Review, is the only art director as far as I know who let illustrators do whatever we want without checking our sketches. danpage-web-carhit.jpg

These 2 images were created for Reader's Digest, "You Be the Judge" column, where they discuss a case that's already been tried and give the reader a chance to make their own judgement. Victoria Nightingale, the AD, wanted the 2 illustrations to have a sequence like effect or even a diptych quality. This case was about a highway accident back in the early 80's, where a woman crossing the road gets accidentally hit, on coming cars stop to help, one of the helpers ends of getting hit by another car... the lawsuits unfold. The cases are never black and white, a lot of details cannot be included in such small spots that usually run 2 and a half inches square.

AIDS And Safe Sex Education...
(Saturday, 12 April 2008) by Yuko Shimizu
Often times work goes smooth, but sometimes it feels like everything goes wrong. Three finished illustration job got killed this months, which doesn't happen often. They were mostly because of clients' direction change. Oh well, what can I do? And here is one of them, a poster to teach teen girls safe sex and AIDS prevention. It was, obviously, not for the US market. At least I got to draw something I would have never drawn otherwise.aids.jpg

Rajiv at L.A.C.M.A.
(Wednesday, 09 April 2008) by Jeffrey Smith

I painted these sketchbook drawings of Rajiv and Earl at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art with my Illustrative Storytelling class.  Where, you might ask, is the museum?  Who cares... Ha! These guys are a lot of fun to draw.

The great thing was the school children.  Hundreds of kids arrived at the museum as we were drawing, and slowly they began to get closer to where we were. Many of the kids were tumbling and rolling down a grassy knoll that slopes up to the roof of the dinosaur museum. Finally, on both days, their curiosity got the best of them as they rolled right into our art supplies and easels.

danpage-FEFE-balls.jpg

I was invited to contribute an image for "FEFE" - Free Entry Free Exit , a visual arts magazine based in Rome, Italy. It showcases graphic design, Illustration, Photo, and visual art from around the world. Each issue deals with a different theme - a phrase from a movie with 25 diverse artists creating a visual based on the phrase, the phrase I had to work with; IT WASN'T PLANNED, from the movie "Intimate Strangers" by P.Leconte.

My artist statement that accompanied my image:

"The plan was to have some fun together, but it wasn't planned when she started breaking my balls.

Italian Translation:

"Il piano era di divertici insieme, ma non era in programma che lei iniziasse a rompermi le palle."

Bonny Doon
(Friday, 29 February 2008) by Marc Burckhardt

Last month, I got a call from Burke Owens at Bonny Doon Vineyard to create art for a new dessert wine they're introducing called Angel Paille, or Angel Pie: a sweet wine made from Grenache Blanc grapes, which are picked ripe and then dried on mats in the vineyard before pressing. The wine was described to me as "lush, with a pale gold color and sweet pear, quince and spearmint aromas", and the vineyard where the grapes were grown is named Beehive. The rest was as easy as pie.

"An evil duke. A motley Fool. A gaggle of country bumpkins.  A melancholy philosopher.  A girl, pretending to be a boy, pretending to be a girl in order to woo a boy.  All the world is a stage, and in this play the stage is crowded with love and laughter and a delicious cast of players."

Almost Persuaded
(Tuesday, 19 February 2008) by Jeffrey Smith

Did this poster image in one of my drawing classes at Art Center.  The image is drawn from a costume model, and then the rest of the image is a kind of "stream of consciousness" process.  The words might be based on something the model said, and the background figures are invented figures or whatever else jumps into my head as I'm drawing the piece.  There are no pencil lines, and no attempt to map out or lay-in the image.  It's what my old friend James McMullan calls "flying by the seat of your pants."

I try to encourage my students to save a place in their lives for a kind of "playful" exploration of image and ideas. These pieces take 2 to 3 hours.

Working for Edel
(Tuesday, 15 January 2008) by Dan Page

This post is in honor of fellow illustrator / Picture Mechanic and now former Art Director of Time magazine, Edel Rodriguez. I've been doing assignments for Edel since 1999. We actually met face to face before he ever hired me. I was in New York in 1998 for the American Illustration Publication Party and back then AI sponsored studio tours, which was exciting for a young illustrator, plus we had the option to get guided tours of select magazine offices. It was a good opportunity to drop off a promo right in the hands of an AD.

Time magazine was my top choice since I always dreamed of working for them. Our group of about 20 arrived greeted by our tour guide, Art Director, Arthur Hochstein. It was thrilling to be in his corner office 50 floors up as he showed us Anita Kunz, C.F. Payne, Tim O'Brien and Matt Mahurin originals. You could tell Arthur was a big fan of Illustration by the excitement in his voice. He then took us to show off the rest of the offices - he made a point to take the group to Edel's office, (of course, I've never heard of him), Edel actually wasn't in his office when we all dropped by. His role as an illustrator was emerging at that time, and Arthur wanted the group to know it. I peered into his office noticing some of his cool drawings of Cuba hanging on the wall. As the group moved on, I quickly ran into his office and placed my little promo on his chair. You never know, right?

That day I was also lucky enough to meet and visit the studios of Guy Billout, Dan Yaccarino, Jordin Isip and Melinda Beck. Later that night I attended the American Illustration publication party. I felt out of place, seemed like everyone knew each other, I bumped into Jordin Isip, hey, here's someone I know... well, sort of. Jordin was nice enough to introduce me to his friend he was in the middle of a conversation with. Lo and behold... it was Edel Rodriguez! To end a long story, he liked my promo and hired me over the next nine years. A BIG thanks Edel, loved working with you. I wish you great success as a full time illustrator.

Below are a few of my favorite images I did for Edel.

Vostok is an artist’s book edition I created in collaboration with Dolphin Press & Print in Baltimore during my visiting faculty residency at MICA. The project was letterpress and screen printed in an edition of 30 and facilitated by Illustration Chair Whitney Sherman.

Vostok refers to the largest subglacial lake in Antarctica. Preliminary research suggests that Lake Vostok supports active micro-organisms that evolved in isolation for several millions of years. However until scientists devise a way to study this uniquely pristine environment without contaminating it, its life forms remain as much a mystery as those beyond our atmosphere. Vostok drills deep to reveal a trajectory between deep ice and deep space.

Copies are available for purchase and the proceeds help fund MICA's residency programs.

Tempted
(Monday, 10 December 2007) by Jeffrey Smith

plyby.wtchywmn.jspm.jpg

This piece didn't have a title when I painted it, and I can't find a copy of Playboy (December 07) to save my life.  So I'll just call it "Tempted."  It is a story about a temptress who uses her charms to gain access to a man and his possessions.

This is a narrative moment from the story.  Having been allured, the man and his seductress are driving to his country house. He thinks he is going to get laid. She is wanting to know what kind of wealth he has, and where it is. As it happens, she is a thief.

I hired a model named Karen. She arrived in a killer outfit; all black, leather jacket, boots and bag, and I sat her in a car with another model. I tried several light sources, finally lighting her with an Omni light through the sunroof of the car. I lit the driver as if on-coming head lights were shining on him. I found some wonderful scrap for the background, and thought of those creepy, wind swept trees that you see all around San Francisco. I realize that the yellow light around the woman's face is a bit of a conceit, but I thought it helped to clarify the focal point, it gave her a haunting quality, and it provided a much needed compliment to all that blue and violet.

Marina Pirate
(Monday, 10 December 2007) by Jeffrey Smith

marinapirate.jspm.jpg

I painted this in my sketchbook at the Los Angeles Marina.  The boat belongs to my friend, Scott.  The pirate is a model named Hunter.  My students and I were sitting on the dock where the boat was tied.  I tried to get close to the subject so that I could utilize strong diagonals in the composition.  We did our drawings in about 3 hours.

Time Magazine
(Monday, 10 December 2007) by Dan Page

danpage-endspend.jpg

This image was commissioned by Time Magazine as seen above in last week's issue - the topic was "possible recession", discussing what may happen to the U.S. economy the way things are going with struggling banks, the volatile stock market, oil prices, the weak U.S. dollar, nervous investors in far-off lands and the collapsing housing market. The number in the bar code refers to "dollars spent per hour by American consumers in the third quarter of 2007". That's over a trillion dollars - $ 1, 117, 077, 626.00 ... in case you're having trouble seeing the amount without the commas.

I did 4 additional spots for the article which discusses possible ways to survive a down turn. This image deals with, Your Home: Hang On; find a fixed rate fast.

Conspiracy Tree
(Saturday, 01 December 2007) by Jeffrey Smith

Arroyo Tree.summer07.jpg

This is a watercolor painting I did with my watercolor class while we were on-location in Pasadena's Arroyo Secco Park.  I gave the students instructions to select and paint a tree from the many kinds of trees in the park.  I chose this beautiful, lonely, old Eucalyptus tree.  The painting took about 7 hours. I used an Aquarell Schmincke watercolor pan set with 36 colors, Raphael Kolinski 8404 sable brushes #12 and #9, and squirrel hair mops, on a Aquarelle Arches, cold pressed, 18" X 24" watercolor block.  I used a wooden, Julian half easel and an umbrella for shade.

I used to dread the idea of painting from nature, especially if anyone else was around. But alas, I've come to a point where I really look forward to the chance!

What I tell the students is paint light to dark with watercolor. And try to complete the form (of the tree) in 3 values and 3 washes only. The techniques I teach are; transparent layering, gradation, wet into wet, fusion, dry brush and blotting.

Green Show
(Wednesday, 14 November 2007) by Jody Hewgill

mad_pantheist.jpg

This is my contribution to the Green show. " the Mad Pantheist " explores the theme of nature worship, and was inspired by the freaky moss in the woods close to our cottage. It's 24" x 36", acrylic on wood panel, and to date is the largest of my paintings. I loved painting to this format and can't wait to create more.

drawing a Bad Girl for The NY Times Book Review
(Monday, 15 October 2007) by Yuko Shimizu
This was for a review on Mario Vargas Llosa's new novel The Bad Girl. I am usually known to create images that are rather complicated, but I am basically a huge fan of simple compositions. Especially that it was going to be on newsprint that comes out with all the other Sunday Times sections, I wanted it to be as simple, graphic and bold as possible...

The Almost Moon
(Wednesday, 10 October 2007) by Jeffrey Smith

10:21:07PicMech.sebould.600.jpg

I painted this illustration for Colin Tunstall at Los Angeles magazine. The article was a review of Alice Sebold's, "The Almost Moon."

In the story, Helen Knightly, a 49 year old art model, smothers and kills her mother. The mother, Clair Knightly, is suffering from senility and dementia. "Dementia,' says Helen, 'as it descends, has a way of revealing the core of the person affected by it. My mothers core was rotten like the brackish water at the bottom of a weeks old vase of flowers."

Helen speaks of her mothers undone chores, and tells how her mother would not leave the house unless she shrouded herself in blankets.

For this illustration, I decided to paint Helen as I imagined she might look while she murdered her mother. I wanted the first beat to be ambiguous; is she doing chores like making the bed, folding blankets, or is she killing someone?

I hired an art model to pose for the photo shoot.  As it happens, the model had more than a little affinity for the story because her mother suffered from severe mental illness in real life.

I tried 3 different light sources; above, below, and straight on, finally choosing "above." I placed a football under the above-mentioned blanket at the models request, and she provided a very smart and appropriate costume.

I used a fairly straight-on angle of view because I wanted to access Helen's trapped face and hands. "Constrictive composition" provided some narrative tension by trapping the character in the composition with shadowy and architectural lines. Interior/exterior was used to create contrasting color and more constrictive lines, and I lovingly thought of Alfred Hitchcock's "Shadow of a Doubt" as I painted the shadows dancing across the curtains and walls of the "sagging house."  And finally, Francisco Goya's "Los Caprichos" was the inspiration for "trapping the lights" around the 2 focal points in the picture.

I painted this picture with FW acrylic inks, and Derwent watercolor pencils, on BFK Rives printmaking paper. The image was digitally scanned, tiled, and minimally rendered in Photoshop, then delivered as a digital file.

This image appeared in Runner's World magazine - definitely a great mag for illustration. The story was about running a series of half marathons when training for a full marathon. Cats...and Dogs
(Thursday, 09 August 2007) by Ward Schumaker

In reference to Katherine Streeter's entry (below) I've refused to be categorized: I'm sort of bi-pet-ual.  Every time I see a cute little pussy, I have to stroke it; and when a  good-looking dog comes around, I can't resist petting.  Recently I sent out a promo of this reading cat and am now working on a cover for a cat book, 25 spots for a dog book, 7-12 illustrations of dogs for Men's Health---it just doesn't stop.  And who would want it to?  As subjects, pets are much preferable to humans.  (Check out the animals section of my website.)

Warning Signs
(Tuesday, 03 July 2007) by Marc Burckhardt

I recently completed this "portrait" of Mike Peters, leader of the Church of Indianapolis (CII), a religious group that has become increasingly cult-like in its behavior and secrecy. In fact, they're so elusive that there are virtually no photos of Peters to be found, and the neighborhood where he and other members live has signs posted warning strangers that they're unwelcome. The article is appropriately entitled "Warning Signs".

Book Cover for Payot-Rivages
(Saturday, 16 June 2007) by Ward Schumaker

For Paris-based Payot-Rivages I recently did three takes for a cover for a new novel by Valérie Gans: Charity Bizness.  It  appears to be an English title, but it's an Americanism used by the author to give it a certain appeal.  I appreciate jobs like this in which I can mix my illustration, my calligraphy, and design; it makes for a unified whole that seems (to me, anyway) entirely natural.

This is an illustration for The New Yorker magazine of a film from New Zealand titled Eagle vs. Shark.  For these jobs, I usually go to a movie screening, or get a DVD to watch, but this time all I had to work from was the film's website.  It's full of clips, downloads, and a catchy song that keeps me coming back to the site.  Check it out HERE, it has some pretty cool graphics too.

Mushroom Cloud
(Friday, 01 June 2007) by Dan Page

danpage-Bulletin.jpg

I recently worked with the very cool Joy Olivia Miller, Art Director of Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, a magazine that covers global security topics especially related to the dangers posed by nuclear weapons, also encompassing environmental issues and emerging technologies. The magazine has been published continuously since 1945. This year, it's the 2007 National Magazine Awards Winner for General Excellence. They are most famously known as being the keepers of the Doomsday Clock.

My assignment was to illustrate 3 stories, all dealing with the Reliable Replacement Warhead program. The image seen above, is a story about coming of age as a nuclear weapons designer, passing knowledge from one generation of weapons designer to the next.

Catskill Mountain High
(Monday, 14 May 2007) by Dan Page

danpage-GD.jpg

Golf Digest's AD, Tim Oliver commissioned me for this fun assignment, illustrating 4 writer's favorite summertime golf getaways. Featured in the June issue, the one above is written by Mark Whitaker titled "Catskill Mountain High" referring to the summer resorts in the mountains north of New York City. I was inspired by this small excerpt from his story; "Where else do you look up from your ball and see Hasidic Jews in tall fur hats and knee-length black wool coats walking along the roads to the nearby towns, or barefoot Buddhists in flowing robes padding back in forth to the local ashram?"

The Starfish Project (Hope Poster)
(Wednesday, 09 May 2007) by Edel Rodriguez

songs.jpg

I am involved in a poster and advertising campaign to raise awareness for The Starfish Project.  The image above is the first design and illustration of a three poster and magazine advertisement series.

The project collects the unused "leftover" medication from patients in the United States who have stopped or changed their antiretrovial therapy.  All drugs have patient identification removed before they are sorted, labeled, and shipped.  To date, they have received over 374,000 donated pills and shipped most of that to partner clinics.  The goal is to collect as much medication as possible to pass on to patients in Nigeria.

The posters will be placed in American hospitals and the ads will be in medical journals and magazines such as POZ.  There will also be some collateral and web component to try and bring awareness to the project.  Cline Davis & Mann, the ad agency, and myself will be donating our time towards this project.  I will post the rest of the posters as I finish them.

Surprisingly, NOT a reject...

danpage-Libido.jpg

You never know what's gonna get the thumbs up or down, I would have bet against this one, but thankfully the client is European - another one from the Esquire UK series on "How to Solve Everything". The question here was "How to Solve Libido Loss". The answer: go Bungee-Jumping, should get the blood flowing again. It makes sense, and all-natural too.

I dunno why but i love alot of my rejections ... a rejection show is an idea that has been floating around for quite a while now ... hmmmmmm ...

Rejected Works
(Wednesday, 02 May 2007) by Eddie Guy

psychology.jpg

This image was made for the cover of a publication featuring an essay on the psychology of inner city violence. Particularly youth gangs. After being accepted by the editors, then cleared by the Creative Director and enthusiastically welcomed by the Art Director, it was finally rejected when a secretary had objections. The art made in the 90's is now stored away waiting for a Picture Mechanics "Rejected Works" show...

Work from The New Yorker in SI Annual
(Saturday, 28 April 2007) by Edel Rodriguez
songs.jpgThis is one of four of my images published in the current Society of Illustrators Annual.  The annual’s great wraparound cover this year is by fellow Picture Mechanics member Jeffrey Decoster.  The SI annual’s redesign a few years ago by D.J. Stout at Pentagram has made the book an even better experience for art directors.  The book is now very handy, user friendly, and contemporary.

The image above was originally published in The New Yorker magazine.  It accompanied an article on the erotic film “9 Songs” by the British director Michael Winterbottom.  The illustration editor on the assignment was Owen Phillips.  I’ve worked with Owen for about 12 years and produced over 100 illustrations for him.  You can see many of those other illustrations in the culture section of my portfolio .  Owen interviewed me for a feature on altpick.com a couple of years ago.  We talk about what it’s like working for The New Yorker, my background, and some of my influences.  You can read that interview here.

Commissioned by Declan Fahy of Esquire UK, this image titled "How To Solve Iraq" was part of a larger feature "How To Solve Everything" - answering tough questions of the world. In total I created 6 illustrations with my art focusing on the solutions. A lot of interesting topics to work with, check it out, it's the April 2007 issue. This image has also been selected for the upcoming Communication Arts Illustration Annual out in July.

I thought that everyone was going to be drawing monsters which i was very excited about ... turned out not to be that way ... but very fun anyways.

This image is a portrait of Howard Hughes made from Irving's book.

Gods Behaving Badly
(Monday, 19 February 2007) by Adam McCauley

underworld.jpg

I recently created a cover and interior pieces for a brilliant first novel by Marie Phillips, "Gods Behaving Badly", published by Random House UK.  The premise is that the Greek Gods are still alive, and share a dilapidated old house in modern day London.  Ms. Phillips crafted a marvelously clever send up of the classic Greek hero story, while simultaneously making uproarious and bawdy page-turning entertainment.  This image is for the end-papers, and illustrates where the London Underground has a secret entrance into the Greek Underworld.

Freeway Love
(Tuesday, 13 February 2007) by Jeffrey Decoster

Freeway-Love-web.jpg

In the spirit of Valentine's Day I thought I would post this image by Mark Ulriksen. I'm lucky enough to own this painting, and as I look at it again I am reminded of how well Mark can simultaneously create a beautiful narrative, and a formal work of art. I could go on all day about the wonderful play of negative space in this piece, or speak of my enjoyment for the staging, and the invitation for my eye to swoop and dive. I might also mention the nice reminder of how, in this fast-paced, rush hour world, it's nice to pull over to the side once in a while and have a smooch.

Saturday Chores
(Tuesday, 06 February 2007) by Dan Page
 danpage-illoz-chores.jpg

Now that we are covered in snow up here in Ontario, Canada, I don't have to think about my Saturday chores. I live on a corner lot, there's quite a bit of grass to cut, and over the years we've added some gardens and shrubs. I'll tell you right now, I suck at maintaining my yard. I've always wondered why because some of my neighbors are making it look very easy. I learned a bit about myself after accepting an assignment from Richard Weigand at The New York Times. The story was actually titled "Saturday Chores". It discusses the different attitudes towards maintaining your yard. What I've learned was, it's not my fault, growing up I didn't have a role model teaching me about proper yard care. It's true, my dad sucked at it too. He'd rather practice his golf swing.

Calligraphy as Illustration
(Thursday, 01 February 2007) by Ward Schumaker
burst.jpg

Calligraphy has become a big part of my work. Standing alone or joined with an image. It began when I did a couple books for The Yolla Bolly Press: Two Kitchens in Provence by MFK Fisher, and Paris France by Gertrude SteinBurst Longing was something I did for the San Francisco Contemporary Music Players. To me, it becomes illustration. I've also been doing personal work in the form of hand-painted books, many with cut paper or stenciled content.

NS-panel-2-wm-b.jpg

Vivienne mentioned the work she and Ward did for Herman Miller's SEE magazine (here) which inspired me to pull together some work I did for the magazine as well. I might mention that the designer, Todd Richards, was one of the most trusting ADs I've worked with. This is one spread out of six; the whole composition can be seen here . After it was published, I tried some different color variations, so what you are seeng is the revised version.

Unwritten Rules
(Thursday, 25 January 2007) by Dan Page

danpage-PM-horror.jpg

Don't get excited, it's not Halloween yet.  I've noticed when working with certain publications, there are some unwritten rules that an illustrator may not know about. I recently was commissioned by Nicholas Blechman to illustrate various "Horror Fiction" reviews for The New York Times Book Review. The only direction I had was to use black and red. I dig horror so I was totally into the assignment.

My sketches had "books" as the subject matter. Nicholas informed me about the Book Review's unwritten rule of not showing "books" within the art. Who knew? Fortunately, the decapitation rule, overruled the book rule. Thanks Nicholas, I love working with you.

Maybe if we share some more unwritten rules, we can write the unauthorized rule book?

Earth day poster 07 preview
(Sunday, 21 January 2007) by Cathie Bleck

EarthDaySturgeon.jpg - 133.96 KB

Here is a mini snapshot of this years Earth Day poster which I just finished. It does not release in the U.S. as the assignment came from the U.S. State Dept. who must abide by a law restricting the U.S. from promotion-propoganda. It will release in April at U.S. Embassys around the world.  This is a sturgeon with a goby fish...something from a sketchbook from the Chicago aquarium.  If you ever find yourself visiting Chicago (how about those Bears)...definately check out the aquarium.

Pre Pix Mex Clocks
(Sunday, 21 January 2007) by Adam McCauley

Clockfour.jpgClockThree.jpg

As a first blog post here at the ol' Picture mechanics, I thought it might be fun to put up this project from the mid nineties.  I believe this was a promotion for a hotel chain, but I can't remember exactly.  What I do remember is it was a lot of fun.

I believe there were about fourteen artists who were each commissioned to create a removable illustrated panel that decorated a custom made wooden clock.  At the time, who'd have thought that eight of these artists would years later be part of the Picture Mechanics?

Multitask from the past
(Friday, 19 January 2007) by Jeffrey Decoster

Just wanted to see what a drawing would look like up here. It's a picture of a woman in one of those flip-a-pancake-while-running races. They don't have those kind of races too much any more. Incidentally, later in life this woman became quite good at talking-on-a-cell-phone-while-driving.

Herman Miller See
(Friday, 19 January 2007) by Vivienne Flesher

Gropius.jpg

Because we share the same website, Ward and I sometimes get asked to work on jobs jointly.  American Illustration asked for an image representing1985 for this year's annual and we chose the Death of Klinghoffer.  I supplied a figure and Ward overprinted it with his calligraphy.  Ward does portraits for Deutsche Grammophon and when they needed a lot of them, rush, they gave one to me.  One of the most interesting jobs was Herman Miller's See, a really amazing magazine with no advertising, just thoughtful writing--and images by wonderful illustrators like Brian Rea and Sam Weber.  I was asked to do 7 portraits and Ward a two-page spread, for an article on the mind/body dilemma---think Plato and Descartes.  Here's one of my portraits, Gropius. You can see more at the likeness section of our website.  Ward's double-headed horse is the image he's currently using in the artist's index.
